Big Changes!

We're making big changes at Blue Square Productions! Our videography business is changing and heading in a new direction. We're still doing weddings, but are also opening the doors to other fun projects and opportunities. As photographers, however, we are still in the wedding biz and want to offer our current and future clients a photography-based website that showcases our work and lets you know who we are and what we do.

We have created a division of Blue Square Productions, called "Karen Disney Photography," which will allow us to separate our wedding photography business from our expanding videography ventures. We are very excited about this new development and hope you will head on over to Karen Disney Photography and see what we have to offer!

Remember Kate and Bill? They got married!! Their families and friends joined them last Saturday for a lovely ceremony at the Leesburg Presbyterian Church. Their Westfields Marriot reception was beautiful and everyone had a great time! I know I've said this a thousand times... but the weather was perfect! Couldn't have asked for better! Enjoy the pictures...

I crossed the street to take some cover shots of the church. Didn't think it would take me almost five minutes to cross back over again... downtown Leesburg traffic! Who knew?

Oh, wait... I live in Leesburg... I should have known better. ;)

Kate and Bill - Engaged!

I'm feeling kinda rockstar-ish! Two blog posts in two days! Not bad. If you're looking for Meghan and Amin's wedding pics - they're the next post down. :)

Kate and Bill came over yesterday to shoot their engagement pictures. Between their schedule and ours, it's been a challenge to get together, but we finally did and just in time, too! They're getting married in just under 3 weeks!! I'm really looking forward to their wedding - what a nice couple! We had fun driving around Leesburg, visiting some of my favorite spots to shoot and finding a couple new ones. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect fall day! Simply gorgeous!

Meghan and Amin - 10.09.10

Meghan and Amin picked a great date to get married: October 9th (also known as our anniversary!). We were happy to spend our special day with them as they celebrated theirs. This was one of the most laid-back couples we have ever worked with... from their casual courtyard ceremony to the relaxed restaurant reception, they truly just had fun and enjoyed themselves!

Friends and family gathered and mingled in front of the house before the ceremony. This was a special time for Meghan and Amin to spend with their guests.

Look closely... it turns out the fifth Beatle was actually Meghan and Amin's much-loved Jack Russell Terrier!

Anne and Lewis 9.25.10

Blue skies, a light breeze, and smooth water meant that Anne and Lewis picked a beautiful day to get married! Their dockside ceremony aboard "The Cherry Blossom" in Alexandria, Virginia was a first for us. We've shot many weddings near water, next to water, and overlooking water. This was the first time we did a wedding on the water! This charming yellow and white paddle boat was the perfect location for an intimate gathering of Lewis and Anne's family and friends. The reception cruise along the Potomac river allowed guests to take in some D.C. sights while they dined, danced, and celebrated this awesome couple!

Anne was calm, cool, and collected before the ceremony.

Liz and Scott 5.15.10

Liz and Scott said "I do" at the Notaviva Vineyards in Purcellville, Virginia. This unconventional couple (the groom wore lego cufflinks and the processional music came straight from the "Star Wars" soundtrack!) were surrounded by family and friends for their intimate ceremony and reception.

Notaviva is the perfect spot for a small wedding! What a beautiful setting.

Kate and JP are such a fun couple! We really enjoyed hanging out with them before their May 8th ceremony at Inn on Poplar Hill in Orange, Virginia. What a beautiful setting for an afternoon wedding! The bride was glowing, the groom was dashing, and the weather cooperated! Enjoy the pictures...

We had been looking forward to Jenny and Jacob's wedding since April, when we spent a rainy day with them in D.C. taking their engagement pictures amid the beautiful cherry blossom trees. They were married on Saturday, October 10 at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg. It was a beautiful day, a beautiful setting, and they were a beautiful couple!

We were quickly losing daylight as sunset approached, but Jenny and Jacob and their wedding party were still up for a few fun pictures in the gardens.

Jenny is the first bride we've worked with who changed from fancy wedding shoes into a comfy pair of Uggs. Flip flops, we've seen. Ballet slippers, we've seen. But not Uggs. She had the most comfortable feet in the house. Umm.. I mean, tent.

We can't take credit for this one. Stole the idea from Kate Triano when we worked with her a few months ago. A bowl of gummi bears is just too cute to resist. Thanks, Kate! :)

Tom and Joanne 10.04.09

Tom and Joanne were married at the Savage Mill Manor House in Savage, Maryland last Sunday. What a beautiful day for a wedding! Tom and Joanne were surrounded by their closest family and friends, and it was evident from the non-stop smiles and laughter that this was a very special day for everyone involved.

Joanne's halter-style dress was gorgeous!

Can't forget the rings!

Tom's face lit up when he saw his bride.

In addition to writing their own vows and exchanging rings, Tom and Joanne included a handfasting ritual in their ceremony.

This was, without question, the most well-organized full group shot we have ever done! All of the guests simply followed the couple's instructions and made their way to the front porch of the house after the ceremony. No wandering off to get drinks, no stopping off at the bathroom. Way to go, guys! Thanks for your cooperation... this was a very important picture for Tom and Joanne and I'm so glad it went off without a hitch!

I love the fall-inspired centerpieces. So pretty!

Family Fun

We had an awesome time hanging out with Kimberly, John, and their daughter, Maya this afternoon! The weather was beautiful and so were they! After a quick photo session at our house we headed into Leesburg for some fun family pictures.

I love the pink! So perfect for their little girl!

For Elisabeth and Nick's wedding this past weekend we headed back to the Briar Patch! We were at the Middleburg B&B back in March and oh, right... we were married there almost five years ago! The Briar Patch, needless to say, has a special place in our hearts!

Elisabeth and Nick had an absolutely gorgeous day to get married! Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, and friends and family that LOVE to dance! It doesn't get much better than that...

The flowers were gorgeous - magenta, lime green, and white! Beautiful!

Jenn and Scott - Take 3!

We love Jenn and Scott! And we had the pleasure of working with them for the third time this past weekend! We did their engagement pictures last summer, their wedding this spring, and now their post-wedding, horse pictures. Wait. Their what??!

You read that right: Jenn has a horse that she loves dearly and she asked about doing a shoot with her, Scott, and Oprah. That's the horse. Oh, and their dog joined us, too.

So we headed into Maryland and spent a little time on the farm where Jenn boards Oprah. The scenery was beautiful, the two-legged models were gorgeous (as always!), and the four-legged models were patient and cooperative. Despite the heat (upper 90s, no breeze, humid - you get the picture), we had a fun time, as we always do with these two! Jenn, Scott, and Oprah were real troopers. We had to move quick to avoid the worst of the heat, but I think we still got some great shots. Enjoy!

Dominique and Jason - 7. 11.09

I can't believe it's already been 2+ weeks since Dominique and Jason said "I do" and I have yet to blog about it! Better late than never, right?

We met this fun couple back in June when they came over for their engagement session. They live in Richmond, but were married in Sterling, as their families live locally. We loved hanging out with them earlier this summer and were really looking forward to being a part of their big day. It's amazing how many pictures two photographers can capture in a single day! We ended up with over 1300 photographs! Here are some of our favorites...

Annie and David - 6.20.09

Annie and David are a really fun couple! They are from the area, but live in Colorado, so the first time we met them was last Saturday - their wedding day! Their ceremony was in northwest D.C. and the reception was at the Springfield Hilton. It was a great day for a wedding and Annie, David, and their many family members and friends all had a great time!

Annie and David both carry a tattoo that they designed: a "dragonfly" of sorts, with a dragon tail and butterfly wings. It was the (very unique) theme of their wedding... you'll see more butterflies on the cake!

David's mom performed the marriage ceremony.

After the formal pictures, we headed over to the National Zoo, where David proposed to Annie last year.

Annie and David had a photo booth at the reception. After guests had their pictures taken they were printed and immediately placed in a scrapbook where people could write a message to the couple. Such a cute idea!

You can't have a photo booth at your own wedding and not go inside!

Karis and Francis are the sweetest couple! I had a great time working with them last weekend as they celebrated their marriage with a small ceremony in Ashburn and a quiet reception in Potomac Falls . Karis and her parents (up from North Carolina for the wedding) had come over to our house on Thursday to take a few bridal portraits. It was really nice getting to know her a little better before the big day and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting her parents!

Dominique and Jason - Engaged!

Dominique and Jason are getting married this July in Sterling, VA. They came out to our house to shoot some engagement pictures last weekend and we had an absolute blast! Dominique and Jason live near Richmond, so this was the first time we'd met; all other correspondence took place over the phone or email, which is unusual for us. They turned out to be so much fun! We are really looking forward to seeing them again in a few weeks.

We took a few formal shots in our home studio...

After a little while we had a quick wardrobe change and headed into Leesburg for some casual pictures. We started at a nearby park (WAAAY too many gnats!!)...

... and then went into town.

You might recognize this next couple from our website! We shot their engagement session last summer and have been looking forward to this wedding for months! Jenn and Scott are a great couple to work with: fun, enthusiastic, and good lookin' to boot! Their Saturday morning wedding was absolutely beautiful! After a week of completely lousy weather, they lucked out with sunshine and blue skies. It truly was a gorgeous day.

Jenn and Scott said "I do" at the River Creek Club in Leesburg, Virginia. It was a nice change of pace to go to a wedding 10 minutes from our house! And what a beautiful setting...

Maternity Shoot!

We had the pleasure of working with soon-to-be parents, Tracy and Joey, last weekend. They are expecting their first child in June and wanted to have some photographs to look back on this amazing time in their lives. We have set up a small studio in our house for portrait work, so Tracy and Joey headed to our place for the afternoon. We had a great time with this fun couple, who are going to be awesome parents!

Tracy's gorgeous belly! She had a friend paint on a henna design. Tracy and Joey spent several months traveling through India and other parts of Asia and have a soft spot in their hearts for that corner of the world.

They're so cute together!

Amazingly, Tracy was already 36 weeks pregnant in these pictures! I kept having to tell her to stick her belly out more... she doesn't look "pregnant enough"! :)

Tracy wanted a few pictures that were more intimate in nature. Benefits of an in-studio shoot? Privacy and good lighting! :)

Heather and Glenn 5.3.09

Heather and Glenn were married last Sunday at Whitehall Manor in Bluemont, Virginia. The rain that came in overnight and refused to budge may have forced the outdoor wedding indoors, but it couldn't dampen the spirit of this great couple! They and their guests had a blast, despite the weather, and the party was still going strong when the last dance was played.

Heather was a beautiful bride!

Between sprinkles and showers, we stepped outside to take whatever pictures we could.

Whitehall Manor has one thing in abundance: covered verandas! They came in handy :)

Jenny and Jacob - Engaged! 4.6.09

We met up with Jenny and Jacob on Monday and took in the beautiful cherry blossoms around the Jefferson Memorial and tidal basin. They were real troopers! Despite the rain that kept us on our toes (and under our umbrellas!), we got some great pictures!

They bought their CIA-esque rain coats when they saw the weather report! Talk about the perfect "look" for a rainy DC photo shoot!

The above picture is one of my favorites from the day.

Jenny and Jacob were very patient with us! Even though it looks like they had the cherry trees to themselves, there were a lot of tourists out and about. We made them wait, and wait, and wait until the coast was clear so we could get some great shots. Thanks, guys!

I asked Jacob to kick up his heels a-la "Singin' in the Rain"... He went a lot higher than I was expecting!

We made our way from the Jefferson Memorial to the FDR Memorial. What a beautiful background for some great shots!

And then... just as we were getting ready to call it a day... the rain stopped! We couldn't resist taking a few more pictures, sans raincoats, as we headed back to our cars.

Jennifer and Harrison 3.15.09

Jennifer and Harrison were married last Sunday at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Annandale, Virginia. This fun couple has three main loves:

1) Each other

2) Their families

3) Badminton

Seriously!

It was a fun day (despite the persistent rain) and everyone had a great time!

In all our years in the wedding industry, we have never seen a bride and groom cut such a clean piece of cake! Not a crumb nor crumble in sight!

Kristy and Quin had a beautiful wedding, despite the rain, at the Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast in Middleburg, VA. This location has a special significance to Pernell and I because we, too, got married at the Briar Patch B&B! It was fun to go back!

It was a small wedding, Kristy and Quin chose to celebrate with family and few close friends, and was planned, largely, by the groom! Kristy has been living overseas, so when they decided to get married, Quin, who lives locally, took on the challenge of planning their big day. He did a great job!

Whew! What a busy year! It may not look like it (my New Year's resolution? Be a better blogger!!) but we've been going non-stop for weeks! It's time for a little R&R. We'll be taking a break for the holidays and promise to return emails, set up meetings, and get back into the swing of things in January.

We would like to say a big "Thank You!!" to all of the couples we worked with this year! We really and truly couldn't do it without you! We hope your first year of married life has been, and continues to be, absolute bliss!

We've been looking forward to Claudia and Jeff's wedding since December, when we had a great time walking around Leesburg (in the rain) and taking some engagement pictures! They are such a sweet couple! Well the big day finally came and the rain that made for an interesting engagement shoot was nowhere to be seen! What a beautiful fall day! The weather was perfect, everyone looked amazing, and the setting was ideal. Claudia and Jeff got married at Whitehall Manor in Bluemont, VA. The manor is nestled in some of Virginia's prettiest countryside. Everyone was taken aback by the beauty of the day.

Lisa and Paul were married in a morning ceremony at the Bristow Manor Golf Club in Bristow, VA. After several days of rain, I think everyone was glad to see a clear sky! The wedding was beautiful! Enjoy the following pics...

Bristow Manor is a beautiful old house that overlooks some lovely Virginia countryside. What a pretty setting in which to say, "I do!"

Jenn and Scott: Engagement Session 8.03.08

What a fun afternoon! We met up with Jenn and Scott in Middleburg this afternoon to shoot their engagement photos. They had their first date in Middleburg and it was also where Scott proposed, so the quaint little town held a lot of memories. The weather cooperated (hot, but not too humid), the sky was a brilliant blue, and Jenn and Scott looked fabulous! These are just a few of my favorites! Enjoy! ~karen

Victoria and Suzanne's Birthday Bash- 6.22.08

So our hairstylist, Heather Plum (Reflections of You, Fairfax), called us up out of the blue to ask if we were available to shoot her mom's 60th birthday party. Of course we were! Anything for Heather, who makes our hair look sharp and pretty at the same time! An anniversary party and a birthday party all in one weekend? We love weddings, but these events provided a nice change of pace.

Heather's mom, Victoria, shares a birthday (well... almost) with her older sister, Suzanne. The two held a joint birthday party at the Ice House Cafe in Herndon, Virginia to celebrate with their friends and family. A fun time was had by all! Here are some of the highlights...

Yvonne and Lowell - 8.23.1958

Yes, you read that right: Yvonne and Lowell were married on August 23, 1958. No, we didn't go back in time to photograph their wedding (but, wouldn't that be cool?) but we were on hand to witness the celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary! They decided to celebrate a little early so that all of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, and extended family and friends would be able to attend.

This was a beautiful event. We've been to so many weddings and seen the start of so many marriages, it was a real treat to spend some time with a couple who have made their marriage work for 50 years. Their many accomplishments include 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, successful careers (him: a minister, her: a nurse), many moves, and world-wide travel!

Yvonne and Lowell are so much in love and it showed throughout the evening in the words that they spoke to each other, the memories guests shared, and the joy that was felt in the room. As Pern and I said when we got home, "Just think... in 46 years we get to do that!" Enjoy the following pictures...

The celebration was held at the Hermitage Inn and Restaurant in Clifton, Virginia.

This is the top of their original wedding cake from 1958! It has been

frozen for 50 years! No, they didn't eat it. (Although I did dare them to do it!)

Their new cake was also beautiful (and edible, too).

A beautiful moment: Yvonne and Lowell spoke meaningful words to each other. He read her the lyrics to "You're Still the One" by Orleans and she read him Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "How Do I Love Thee?" The couple then shared a pair of diamond earrings, in lieu of an exchange of rings. Talk about a cool couple! Word on the street is that 10 years ago they celebrated their "retirements" (they haven't been able to stay retired) with tatoos!

They topped off the evening by cutting their anniversary cake

and sharing a special dance.

Katelynn and Christian 5.30.08

What a busy weekend! We (actually, Pern) kicked it off with Katelynn and Christian's wedding at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna. That was followed by an assist (again, for Pern) with our fellow photog, Kate Triano, at The Galleria at Lafayette Center on Saturday, and a third wedding (!) - this time for videography - on Sunday! That one was Holly and Josh and it was held at the Westfields Marriott. All in all, a wedding-filled weekend! We (mostly Pern, really - 'cause he was doing most of the work!) had a great time! Emily and Nate - 4.5.08

Emily and Nate were married at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. last Saturday. We had double the fun, wearing both "videographer" and "photographer" hats this time around! We were hired by Emily and Nate last March to shoot their video and then asked by Kate Triano, our fellow photog/mentor to assist her with their photography. Combine that with the fact that we were working with our favorite DJ, Evan Reitmeyer, and fabulous Bella Notte co-ordinator, Sara Bauleke, and it was the "Dream Team" of weddings! We had a blast! Emily and Nate made a beautiful couple, the RR Building provided a truly elegant setting, and fun was had by all! Here are a few of our favorite shots... Enjoy! ~k

We got some fabulous news today from our friend, Evan Reitmeyer , that we made it into "the knot: Best of 2008" issue (in stores now!) !!! We are super excited!! This is a national publication that highlights the "best of" wedding vendors across the country. The knot gets their information from brides who have reviewed their vendors and voted for their favorites. We are honored to be among the select few from the Washington, DC Metro area that were chosen.

This is only our fourth year in this fabulous business and our second recognition (WUSA9's Best in D.C. A-List 2006). We are thrilled to realize that our brides (and grooms, of course!) appreciate our work enough to take the time to give us a shout out! We love what we do and look forward to working with the future couples who will come our way. Thank you to everyone who voted for us (honestly, we didn't even know we'd been "nominated")... we are truly touched!

We went to North Carolina a few days ago to visit my sister, brother-in-law, and 3 month old niece. We had a great time and, of course, took some (285) pictures (!). These are some of the highlights. Babies are so cute... -k

It's just never a good idea to give two people who are terrible diary / journal-keepers a blog and expect them to keep it updated! Sigh. I hereby pledge to do my best to keep this blog interesting and current. No more than one week will pass between posts.

Ummm... yeah, we'll see how long that lasts. :)

Anyway... what have we been up to? Well, we had the chance to assist our favorite photographer, Kate Triano, a couple of weeks ago. The wedding was on Leap Day, 2/29/08, and the couple, Tom and Junellyn, were great! Pern had a great time hanging out with Tom before the ceremony and he captured some cool shots at Starbucks (it was were Tom and Junelyn met). The transition to offering photography packages has been really exciting! We have learned tons of new stuff in the past year and are having loads of fun trying it all out. We have redone our website, redesigned our logo, finally got a P.O.Box in Leesburg (the old one was in Chantilly) and are now working on our new sample albums. We assisted our friend and photographer, Kate Triano, a couple of weeks back and are anxiously awaiting an album that we put together from that wedding. We'll let you know how it comes out. We could even show it to you in person! :) We are currently booking videography AND photography for 2008 and even 2009! Heritage Hunt Bridal Show

We participated in the Heritage Hunt Bridal Show today in Gainesville, VA. This was the fourth or fifth bridal show we have done since starting Blue Square in 2004, and by far the most fun! We met many brides, moms of brides, and friends of brides and enjoyed talking to each and every one of them. Last year we had a less-than-ideal location and felt rather invisible for the majority of the time. This year... we ran out of flyers! It was non-stop! We had a great time.
